"Here is a great idea for lazy and forgetful slugs like me: a power bar with a USB connection to your computer, so it detects when the computer is turned off, and then shuts down all of the peripherals."

"USB Ecostrip Saves Power"

Ubergizmo
"The USB Ecostrip comes with a USB connector that hooks up to your computer - hence when you turn your computer off, the entire power strip will also turn itself off, helping you save power in the process. This helps the forgetful types to power down other devices that shares the same power strip each time the PC is shut down."

What's the Buzz?
I am a multi-tasker at the core, but parenthood forces you to take the skill to entirely new level. Between the constant chatterbox that is my toddler, the fried pregnancy brain that is overflowing with hormones and the general scatter-brained tendency my personality lends itself to - I am a walking pile of forgetfulness. I'm basically useless. And, that's okay. I rely on lists that stretch from here to Timbuktu, brightly flagged emails, alarms beeping at regular intervals for a variety of events and an answering machine that routinely has messages left from me to myself. It all helps me round up the loose ends and stay on the road without skipping too many stops or off-ramps.

When you take all this into account, it's no wonder that I get really excited over a product that thinks for itself and does the work without requiring any effort or brainpower on my part. My latest find is the EcoStrip. It's a power strip that is both a surge protector and a power saver. You might have heard the term "vampire electronics" that refers to devices that suck electricity even when their power switches are turned off. The reference to the nocturnal bloodsuckers alludes to the fact that they are usually not being used at night and owners forget about the electrical requirements.

EcoStrip takes care of your vampire electronics in one easy device. The latest model, the EcoStrip 2.0, acts like a normal power strip and surge protector, but shuts off power to all your computers peripherals when the computer is turned off. In an electronic world that's growing at a staggering pace, it completely eliminates the need to turn off all the switches when you are done with the computer. Sometimes this is upwards of a dozen switches. The strip is USB controlled and tied into your computer's power setting.

We added the EcoStrip to our desktop computer set up in May. I have noticed a small change in our electrical bill when I compare it to the usage last year during the same month. It's not a huge financial savings, but it must be taken into account that it's a completely hands-off approach to saving electricity. The strips cost around $35 and have posted an average savings of up to $100 per year on electricity. If we are only saving $3 per month - but I estimate that it's closer to $5 - the strip has paid for itself in less than one year. I saved money I didn't know I had spent and stopped using electricity I didn't need or know I was using.

The EcoStrip is a perfect device for today's day and age. We live in an electronics world and between the batteries and the seemingly endless standby electrical usage - every little bit counts. I appreciate that it's a hand-off that takes care of itself when I'm racing after a toddler, enjoying the sunshine that we've been blessed with or spending time with a good book. It's a perfect eco-friendly solution to saving money and electricity.

EcoStrip: Providing the Power to Protect
At first, you may not be taken aback by the design of Ecostrip - a solid white bar, 6 outlets, a standard plug, and a small cable leading off the side. However, while EcoStrip may look like your standard surge protector, it really does so much more (here's a hint: that small cable has a lot to do with it!). Although the company mentions that you need to have this for about a year to see the real savings, after plugging it in at my home and office, I can already tell that it works.

For starters, let's understand that, yes, EcoStrip is a power strip AKA surge protector. However, with an added USB cable, the once simple surge protector becomes a medium for a more sustainable home and office.

Simply put, EcoStrip provides a great opportunity to cut back on energy use, monthly bills, and "else-where" emissions. How so? By effectively limiting and eliminating "vampire power" - that power that slowly leeches away when your devices are plugged in but you're not using them. This "vampire power" accounts for about $11 billion in costs a year for the nation as a whole, and may even make your ordinary computer into something that uses as much energy as an energy efficient refrigerator. That's a lot of energy (and money) used when we aren't around.

EcoStrip is the solution, and the savings come from the attached USB cord. Once the cord is plugged into your computer, the surge protector allows power to move through. Once it is unplugged or the computer sleeps, the power will be limited. It is through the USB cord that we can find such great savings, which means more green for both us and the planet.

EcoStrip Promises to Save Electricity Wasted by "Vampire Electronics"
Power strips are already a convenient way to utilize one outlet for many functions. This time of year especially, the idea of an effective power strip calls to mind the scene from A Christmas Story where the father nearly causes a house fire as a result of too many Christmas lights and a leg lamp plugged into one outlet. A power strip would have certainly helped his cause. Today, seeing as how we have more electronics than ever, the EcoStrip is sure to be a safe, and not to mention environmentally conscious, solution.

The USB EcoStrip 2.0 is designed to help you conserve energy by cutting off all electricity from devices, many of which require electricity even when turned off, during the hours they are not in use. "Standby power" is the electricity used by devices even when they're not on. In most devices, this is a negligible amount of electricity, but the watts can add up throughout a household and across the nation. The EcoStrip, however, cuts off all power flow to the periphery devices to eliminate standby power when they're turned off. Described as an "energy saving smart power strip with surge protection," the $45 USB EcoStrip 2.0 could potentially save between $1 and $100 a year per workstation, which will vary depending on the user's down time and number of devices. The product has, as its name implies, a USB connection unlike other power strips on the market. The USB cord automates the process of turning off standby power sources of connected peripheral devices when they are not being used.

Web Secret
Haven't reviewed a gadget in a while. It's time.

If you're smart, all of your computers are connected to power via a power strip of some kind. That's because you know that power surges can destroy your equipment.

Normally though, when you turn off your computer, it is still using power - 70 to 250 watts - nearly as much power as an energy efficient refrigerator.

That's great, and saving power makes me feel thrifty and virtuous. But I also like the fact that the EcoStrip plugs into a USB port and doesn't require any more work than that to function.

Simple - I like.
